For several venture capital
organizations and investment firms, TCG assessed the risk and
potential for start-up carriers planning to offer competitive local
services. In these separate studies, TCG quantified the market in
major metropolitan areas, evaluated the carriers' business plans and
analyzed regulatory conditions and restrictions.
For a competitive access
provider in New York City, TCG wrote the business plan and assisted
in obtaining initial capitalization. This work involved all aspects of
planning, including regulatory, technological and business
considerations.
For a
newly created regional
interexchange carrier, TCG performed traffic and marketing studies
and developed the business plan that resulted in the successful initial
capitalization of the company. As the firm expanded, TCG provided
assistance on various legislative, regulatory and business planning
issues.
For two railroads and a
regional transit authority, proposals were evaluated to lease
rights-of-way for the deployment of commercial fiber optics
telecommunications systems. To determine the attractiveness of various
route segments, telecommunications traffic models were created.
Strategies were developed for maximizing the value of the rights-of-way
in the telecommunications industry. The firms were assisted in
negotiations that resulted in agreements to use the rights-of-way by
carriers and the provision of fiber capacity for the firms' internal
needs.
For a cable television
company wishing to obtain fiber-optics backbone transmission
services, TCG provided models that mirrored the financial planning and
analysis likely to be used by the exchange carrier proposing to provide
such services. These models formed part of the support provided by TCG
to the cable company in negotiating the price and other terms and
conditions of the fiber-optics offering.
For a regional Bell
operating company (RBOC), TCG analyzed the various functions
performed by Bell Communications Research (Bellcore). The study devised
several new methods for classifying Bellcore's activities, giving new
insights into the strengths and weaknesses of Bellcore's programs from
the RBOC's standpoint.
For a supplier of voice
response systems and services, TCG evaluated the technical and
commercial viability of key patents held by the company. TCG then
assisted in the preparation and execution of a business strategy based
upon this assessment.
For a computer manufacturer
with an increasing interest in telecommunications, TCG created courses
on switching and traffic engineering. A number of sessions were taught
within the company based upon this material.
